A Right Royal Knees-Up!

A Right Royal Knees-Up!

Amy Graham looks back on the fun had at the St Chad’s Coronation Party.

On Monday 8th May, we hosted an incredible Coronation Party and welcomed all members of the community. Despite the damp weather, everyone embraced the spirit of the event to celebrate the new King. The whole event had a Union Jack theme with red, blue and white bunting and flags galore, setting the tone of a celebration.

The small hall was set up with children’s crafts put on by the Bagnall family, with a small team of face painting, badge making and a very successful tombola.

Outside there was the very popular BBQ with Annie and her team preparing burgers (from Headingley butchers), sausages, veggie sausages and samosas. There was an ice-cream stall, freshly made crepes and a well staffed and stocked bar, including beer, wine, ‘Pimms’ and homemade lemonade.

The rain finally stopped to enjoy the fantastic 3 piece trio playing traditional swing jazz music. Over on the field, St Chads Scouts had set up camp activities for older children, including making S’mores (melting marshmallows sandwiched in biscuits) and there was a bell tent for crafts. Hannah and Jo helped to supervise the donkey rides up to the church.

Inside, the main hall  was set up like a cafe with a range of delicious cakes for sale, helped along by members of our youth group. We had the pleasure of listening to Michael on his wind up ‘music box’ (which is called a Pell Organ) playing various tunes on request. There was a cut-out King Charles III and framed members of the Royal family to pop your head into!

The event was rounded off with Clare Pascoe singing the national anthem with a resounding applause.

The team of organisers are very grateful to all the volunteers (both before, during and after the event), St Chads Scouts and all the cake and tombola donations. We estimate that there were around 100+ volunteers  on the day that all contributed to the event’s success making around £2000; a fantastic amount, despite the poor weather.

Just goes to show, come rain or shine we know how to bring the community together for a national event and celebration! It was a fabulous afternoon with a great turn out. Huge ‘thank you’ again to everyone who supported the event.
