Situated next to St. Chad’s Church, and in a beautiful semi-rural setting, St. Chad’s Tennis Club is renowned for its friendly, social atmosphere. Members play on the two outdoor courts throughout the year, pending the weather. Our newly refurbished clubhouse has changing and toilet facilities. New members welcome!

In 2000 St Chad’s Green Team started promoting awareness of our responsibilities towards the environment and sustainability of planet earth. Each year we hold at least one special service (usually in the summer) which focusses on an aspect of our responsibilities to the environment. There is a recycling box in the Welcome Porch of the church for used reading glasses, mobile phones, batteries, computer cartridges and postage stamps. The churchyard is maintained for the benefit of wildlife, whilst always remembering its prime purpose as a resting place for the deceased. (see Churchyard as wildlife haven for further details).

The Mothers’ Union is a Christian organisation with more than 3.6 million members in 81 countries worldwide. The backbone of the MU is its worldwide network of volunteers. Whatever their back ground they are committed to supporting marriage and family life. They give their time generously to help others, whether by running local projects, supporting international campaigns or fundraising. Here at St Chad’s our group supports the Toddler Group and coffee on a Thursday morning after the 10.30 service.
The Mothers’ Union also employs over 300 paid workers around the world. These are women drawn from the local area, so they speak the local languages, understand the culture and customs. They will also have firsthand experience of the problems their neighbours face. MU workers provide vital leadership for efforts in the community.
Locally the MU support the visitors centre at Leeds Prison, we also knit balaclavas for Mission to Seafarers and bonnets and jackets for the premature babies units at LGI and St James’. Every week a branch of MU from Ripon and Leeds say midday prayers at Ripon Cathedral on a Thursday. We also provide an east coast holiday home for deserving or needy families. One campaign the MU has been involved in is ‘Bye-buy childhood’. This aims to empower families to challenge the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood through positive action.

The Church has a history of choral music which extends from before the 20th century. Even in the early days they were led by a professional musician and a deputy. As with all choirs there have been ups and downs and changes as time has demanded.
At the present time the choir is small in numbers but the standard remains high. The choir sings twice each Sunday for morning and evening services, practising on a Friday evening from 7 till 8pm.
In addition to normal services the choir provides special music at the evening services for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany (Candlemas) Services as well as Palm Sunday and Good Friday.
We do need additional members in all parts so if you are interested in joining us then please get in touch with Christine Khullar in the parish office in the first instance – email: office@stchads.co.uk or tel: 0113 2744322. It is important that we can all work together as a group so there would be a short audition and a ‘trial’ period so we can see how we get on.
The choir is much more than just a singing group. We are a group who know each other well but are always pleased to welcome new members.
